VITROSEP
INTRODUCTION
The large glass transformation and manipulation industry is faced with a difficult solution to the problem of particle elimination generated by the different work processes in many applications, such as flat glass, automotive glass, optical glass, ophthalmic lenses, etc.
VITROSEP, after many years of experience in eliminating glass particles in
different production processes, has faced the important challenge issued from the need to ensure the water quality in large production lines and to eliminate the amount of waste they produce.
The cooling or the lubrication of the diamond wheels is extremely important. The diamond wheels need to be cooled with water and synthetic coolant in a closed circuit, which causes an accumulation of particles in suspension, resulting in the efficiency of the coolant being gradually reduced. The sedimentation process, used traditionally to promote the sedimentation of the particles in suspension with the help of baffles, or adding polymers, is only a partial solution that adds new problems. It only represents an attempt of limiting the quantity of particles in circulation, not solving the problem of their total elimination. Our concern is focused in reducing the water consumption and fulfilling the norms for discharge into public sewers. Starting with the experience gained in the field of particle separation, Vitrosep has developed a new model of separator with wide performances, based on the concept of cost reduction and operational
effectiveness.
The separation of the suspended solids takes place by means of a process developed by Vitrosep, based on a concentration column which allows to eliminate 95% of the particles present in the cooling circuit, that are discharged periodically in the form of dry solids.
The concentration column incorporates in its interior several retention elements especially conceived for the separation of glass particles that are stuck on the surface of the columns forming a cake. This cake breaks by means of impulses of compressed air and is expelled automatically into a container, in compact and dry pieces of up to 10 mm thick, in this way facilitating the further manipulation for its elimination.
The process of water treatment is cyclic and automatic. The result of the
separation of glass particles is the waste in a completely dry state, and clean
cooling water.
The dried solid waste is evacuated without downtime in the production line. The water, treated in closed circuit, is recycled for reuse in the industrial process.
OPERATION
Once the machine VITROSEP is on, all process steps are performed following a sequence of pre-programmed operation.
The separator VITROSEP is equipped with a PLC control unit, based on solidstate logic that incorporates a microprocessor and Flash EPROM internal
memory chips, programmed to perform all operation cycles automatically.
SEPARATION PROCESS
Four mixers are installed in the water reception tank to maintain the glass
particles in suspension and to obtain a homogeneous concentration.
The separation process consists of the following phases:
Concentration
The water aspired from the reception tank
undergoes a concentration process where
clean water and a solid waste are obtained.
The water circulates, driven by a centrifugal
pump, inside a column where the glass
particles are retained forming a cake.
Drying
When the PLC detects (by means of a
pressure switch) significant build-up of
compacted powder, the water is drained
and the cake is dried, by blowing with
compressed air.
Expulsion
Having completed the drying cycle,
the compacted powder cake is
cracked by a pulse of blow-back air
and drops downward into a
container, ready for disposal.
FUNCTION
The separator VITROSEP has been specially designed to eliminate large
quantities of solid wastes avoiding the sedimentation with mixers whose purpose is to obtain an homogeneous concentration in the dirty water and to facilitate the removal of the particles. The separator VITROSEP has been conceived to supply clean water to the glass handling industry in general, and is suitable for industries specializing in complex tasks in general, where working with clean water is imperative for the final quality of the production.
The dirty water collection tank is divided in two halves, each one equipped with mixers. The mixer is driven by a gear reducer at a very slow speed to maintain insuspension the glass particles in the bottom of the suction area.
The Separator VITROSEP suction the dirty water, and once cleaned it returns it to the area of treated water of the tank. As the separator usually works in bypass, the flow that circulates through the separator is inferior to the total flow of the circuit, and the difference passes from one side of the tank to the other one by overflow.
